The theme of 6th grade Art at McPherson Middle School is Influential Artists. Through this theme, students learn about particular artists throughout art history; their background, their artistic development, their influences in the art world, and their major works of art created.
Scholastic Art - Tim Burton

Tim Burton and Contrast Lesson
In this lesson, students will learn about the American artist, Tim Burton, and study the art principle: contrast. Students will look at the artworks by Tim Burton titled The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy (1998), Picasso Woman(1980-1990), and The Black Cauldron (1983) observing Burton’s expressive drawings of gothic fantasy and distorted views. For the project, students will create a self-portrait charcoal drawing in the manner and style of Tim Burton through the use of various tools to blend and generate the different value tones of charcoal. The project is worth 100 points.

Georgia O'Keeffe and Value Lesson
In this lesson, students will learn about the American artist, Georgia O’Keeffe, and focus on the art element: value. Students will look at artworks by Georgia O’Keeffe titled Oriental Poppies (1927), Black Mesa Landscape (1930), and From the Lake (1924) identifying O’Keeffe’s zoomed in images of landscapes and flowers that are rich in displaying different value tones and showing form. For the project, students will create an oil pastel drawing of a flower much like Georgia O’Keeffe, and generate various levels of color value within sections of their flower, making it appear three-dimensional on a two-dimensional surface. The project is worth 100 points.
Art & Man - Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci and Unity Lesson
In this lesson, students will learn about the Italian artist, Leonardo da Vinci, and explore the art principle: unity. Students will look at the artworks of Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine(1489), The Last Supper(1495), and Mona Lisa(1503) noticing da Vinci's use of naturalism and linear perspective within his works of art. For the project, students will create their own parody of the Mona Lisa by working with their own unified theme that contrasts with their drawing materials. The project is worth 100 points.
