The theme of 7th grade Art at McPherson Middle School is Significant Art Movements. Through this theme, students learn about art movements throughout art history which shared style of art with a specific common philosophy or goal, followed by a group of artists during a restricted period of time.
Scholastic Art - Surrealism
Students will complete the 'Scholastic Art' reading about the art movement, Surrealism, and answer the questions. This assignment can be found in Google Classroom under the Classwork tab, week 8. Surrealism and Texture Lesson
In this lesson, students will learn about the art movement, Surrealism, and analyze the art element: texture. Students will look at the Surrealism artworks of Salvador Dali The Persistence of Memory (1931), Max Ernst The Fireside Angel (1937), and Yves Tanguy Through Birds Through Fire But Not Through Glass (1943) identifying the notion of dreams and the unconscious mind within each eerie artwork, and how our dreams play a part in our thoughts and experiences daily. For the project, students will create a three-dimensional ceramic creature that emphasizes different types of texture. The project is worth 100 points.

Op Art and Contrast Lesson
In this lesson, students will learn about the art movement, Op Art, and focus on the art principle: contrast. Students will look at the Op Art artworks of Bridget Riley Movement in Squares (1961), Victor Vasarely Tridem K (1968), and Frank Stella Harran II (1967) noticing the design process within each optical illusion, and how each artist worked with simple shapes and lines to generate patterns. For the project, students will create an optical illusion agamograph drawing emphasizing contrast through the use of complementary colors, value, and geometric and organic shapes generating depth on their two-dimensional surface. The project is worth 100 points.
Art & Man - Alexander Calder
Students will complete the 'Art & Man' reading about the Futurism artist, Alexander Calder, and answer the questions. This assignment can be found in Google Classroom under the Classwork tab, week 1. Futurism and Movement Lesson
In this lesson, students will learn about the art movement, Futurism, and examine the art principle: movement. Students will look at the Futurism artworks of Natalia Goncharova The Cyclist (1913), Umberto Boccioni Unique Forms of Continuity in Space (1913), and Gerardo Dottori Aurora Volando (1933) observing the common theme of movement within each artwork, and how the artist portrayed motion within one image. For the project, students will create a monochromatic painting of a silhouette emphasizing movement through the different tints and shades of a single color. The project is worth 100 points.
